What to Bring & How to Prepare
- Wear comfortable shoes and bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunblock — coastal winds and sun combined can be intense.
- Bring a light jacket or windbreaker: even in summer, sea breezes at Cape Point can be cool.
- Carry a water bottle and stay hydrated.
- If you plan to visit the penguin colony, time your stop early or late to avoid peak crowds.
- Make sure your camera or phone is fully charged: the viewpoints along Chapman’s Peak and Cape Point are extraordinary.
- Ask your guide about the best photo spots, as they often know hidden lookouts that are less crowded.
- If you want to take the boat trip to Seal Island or the funicular at Cape Point, let us know in advance so we can arrange or advise on timing.
- Respect wildlife: at Cape Point, you may see baboons; do not feed or approach them.
Itinerary
This Cape Peninsula tour is a mix of coastal splendour, wildlife, history, and mountain roads, making it one of the most memorable day trips out of Cape Town.
Day 1: Cape Peninsula day tour
Your journey starts in the city, driving past the Atlantic Seaboard suburbs of Green Point, Sea Point, Clifton and Camps Bay with sweeping views of the ocean on one side and the Twelve Apostles mountain range on the other.
Next, you travel to Hout Bay, a charming fishing village nestled between mountain slopes and sea. For those who wish, there is an optional boat trip (at extra cost) from the harbour to Seal Island, where Cape fur seals sun themselves on rocky outcrops.
After Hout Bay, the tour takes you along Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the world’s most scenic mountain passes, until you then enter the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Here, you can walk (or take a funicular) up to the Cape Point lighthouse at the tip of the Peninsula. On a clear day, you may even spot whales or dolphins offshore.
From there, you head to Simons Town, a historic naval town. Here, you have the optional chance to visit Boulders Beach to see the African penguin colony.
For lunch, you can enjoy a relaxed break at Simons Town’s Mariner Wharf, where there are restaurants, sea views, and a laid-back harbour atmosphere.
In the afternoon, you drive along the False Bay coast, passing through Kalk Bay, St James, Muizenberg, and Fish Hoek. Muizenberg’s colourful beach huts and surf culture, along with the nostalgic charm of Kalk Bay, offer lively and photogenic stops. There is an opportunity to stretch your legs, shop, or watch surfers in action.
Finally, the tour winds back toward Cape Town, sometimes skirting the lush slopes near Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, before dropping you off at your accommodation by early evening.
